For aesthetically pleasing proportions, we recommend a flag that is 1" long for every 1' of boat length. The staff should be twice the length of the flag's vertical edge.
Keep in mind, the Canadian ensign's proportions create a length-to-width ratio of 2:1. For example, a 33' boat should fly a 18" x 36" yacht ensign on a 36" staff though the flag will be longer than the staff while at rest.
American flags are 3:2. For example, a 33' boat will fly a 24" x 36" yacht ensign on a 48" staff.
A shorter staff may be used if there is insufficient space.
